Cullercoats 3 match unbeaten run was ended in cruel circumstances after a long trip to Hexham on Saturday morning. Playing downhill first half on a steep sloping pitch Cullercoats battered Hexham in the opening period but had left their shooting boots at home on this occassion. Strikers Luke Monaghan and Steven Taylor both found themselves through on goal but seemed intimidated at times by the Giant Hexham Keeper who proved impossible to beat. Josh Irwins trickery on the right wing caused no end of problems for the Hexham defence and his cross was almost turned in by Monaghan at the far post but his left footed effort screwed just wide. Hexham rarely troubled the Cullercoats defence early on but managed to lead 1-0 at half time as Cullercoats failed to clear the ball for the first and only time in the match and paid the ultimate price. The second half proved to be quite literally an uphill struggle as the away side could not get forward on enough occassions to really threaten the Hexham rearguard who stood firm. A surging run and cross from Lewis Williamson at right back was the closest Cullercoats came to a second half equaliser, but the ball just wasnt meant to fall to a striker as Hexham cleared. Some outstanding defending from David Shipley and Oliver young meant that Tony Blacklock was rarely put to the test in goal as Hexham held on to go above Cullercoats in the league Table.
