The Under 8s continued their fine form in the KYPC ‘friendly’ league, with an excellent performance against newcomers, Bedlington, in difficult windy conditions.
The game got off to a flying start with early goals from Connor Sherriff (striker, capt.), who was very lively from the start. The midfield trio of Elliot Anderson (central midfield), Harvey Thompson and Jack Tatum created numerous chances in a very one-sided first half into the wind. Connor Sherriff took both chances with super finishes to put the Under 8s into a 2-0 lead, before Elliot Anderson added a third with an excellent half volley into the top corner.
At the back, Daniel Brewis (keeper), Ryan Norris and Jack Reid (defence) dealt very well with the windy conditions, winning numerous balls in the air and marshalling countless long balls from the opposition keeper to safety.
At half time Joseph Hornby and Leighton Alexander were introduced to the wide midfield areas and the team made an immediate impact, wind- assisted, with Elliot Anderson running riot through the central midfield areas, ably assisted by his midfield team mates. He added a second half hat-trick with a close range effort added in between by Harvey Thompson to stretch the score line to 7-0.
Bedlington never stopped competing and got their reward with an excellent volley to claw a goal back, before Jack Reid struck a long range ball forwarded from the edge of his own area, which took a big bounce in the wind and evaded the keeper, to make the final score 8-1 to the Under 8s.
The game was played in good spirit throughout by two quality teams. However, the Under 8s edged the contest through strong running and excellent finishing in front of goal.
Joseph Hornby was awarded ‘man of the match’ for his second half performance in midfield and defence. He won a string of challenges and played an excellent squad performance in different positions, on a day when the whole team could have picked up the award.
The Under 8s play New Fordley on Monday 4/4/11, kick off 6.15pm (meet at 5.30pm).
